The name Desertserges comes from a priest named Seargus who lived in St Patrick's time. The place where his church stood is about one quarter of a mile, North, West, of Kilcoleman School. The remains of a graveyard are still visible there. His church is unable to be seen now. In Irish Disceart means a cell, or a little church and hence the name Desertserges means the church of St. Seargus.
