At a place called Lettercolum near Timoleague there is a holy well, called the Ladies' Well. It is believed that the Blessed Virgin appeared there long ago to a monk who used to lay down to sleep at this certain spot. One day as he slept the Virgin Mary appeared to him in a dream and she told him that a well would spring up on that spot. She told him how he would know it by certain signs. He would see a Dove and an Angel coming towards him and it was true because when he awoke the well was beside him.
On the 15th. August which is the feast of our Lady, crowds of people visit the well and they pray and drink the water. Many people are cured of their diseases at the well.
