  1. When the people had no convenience for travelling they had to walk and a lot of them used to walk without any shoes. They had no horses or cars long ago. The women those times had to walk to town with their baskets and many of them walked without any shoes. When they would within half a mile of the town they would sit down and put on shoes. They would have a big load coming home in the basket and would some-times bring two or three stone of meal on their heads. They would then take off their shoes again and walk home with that load bare-footed. Some of the women those times used wear leather shoes and others 'perk' shoes. I know a travelling woman by the name of Mary O' Sullivan and she is seventy-five years of age and she wore no shoes. There is a piseog not to throw out the water of feet when anyone is out.
