- In 1905 this province first came into prominence in Gaelic football; but hurling was practised throughout the county Galway since the Gaelic Athletic Association was established.At that time the championship of Connaught lay with Mayo and since then they have won more provincial championships than all the other Connaught counties combined. In 1906 the Mayo team played two great games against the Kerry team. These matches were for the Croke Cup. The first match was played in Tuam and resulted in a draw, of one point each. The replay took place in Ennis a fortnight later when Mayo beat Kerry very decisively by seven points to four. The late(continues on next page)
