  1. Old schools were situated in Rath, Cargins, Runamoat.
Mr. Martin Timothy taught in Rath. Mr. Shanagher taught in Runamoat. The teachers lodged in local farmers' houses. They were paid by the children. Reading, writing and sums were taught. The children were all seated on long forms. They were not divided into classes. Slates and slate pencils were used. When winter would come the teacher and pupils would go to farm houses, staying a day in each.
