- (continued from previous page)There is a lime kiln on our farm, but it was not lit for the past forty years. There is a lime kiln on almost every farm around here. There was no artificial manure making years ago and lime was used instead. For any kind of land lime is very good especially for pastures. Before the kiln was lighted there was a load of turf and dry sticks put in the bottom then a layer of culm and then a layer of lime stones and so on until the kiln is full. The lime stones were got on our farm near the kiln. The quarry where the lime stones were got is still to be seen but it is not opened now. At that time the lime used to be spread on the land as manure. There are lime kilns in every townland around here there is a lime kiln on Maher's farm and on Delaney's farm and many other farms. I heard all this from my uncle James Gorman who saw the kiln lighted. There is a field beside the kiln and we call it the kiln field on account of the kiln that was/is there.
