  1. It was in the year 1847 that the famine first appeared.
    The famine with the fever and other diseases which it caused (?) so much that great numbers died and some died on board ship when sailing to America.
    It lessened the population by two million during the famine. One half of the number died of hunger or disease and the other half left the country.
    That year the Indian meal also came to Ireland and they ate it not properly cooked and died.
