- It is said that during the fighting at the Curragh in 1798 a priest was shot by the English soldiers, and that his body was left on the plain between the Gibbet Rath and French Furze. The men of the district were afraid of being shot if they went near the body, so two women and a boy dug a hole near it and buried it. The place where it was buried was well known to the local people down to a few years ago, when the mound was levelled by a horse-trainer to make the place safe for his horses, and it is difficult now to find out the exact spot where the grave lies.
