    incident took place. Every door in the wing of the hospital, which was kept for the prisoners, opened of its own accord. They opened and shut, and this continued till early morning.
    My father related the strange happenings of the previous night to the officer-in-charge, but the latter told him that this was a nocturnal occurrence. He then narrated the following story:-
    "Some years ago a lunatic was guarded here, till he was conveyed to Carlow. Unfortunately on the night before the day he was to be brought to Carlow, he escaped. The warden brought him in his supper, and forgot to lock the door. The lunatic, on seeing his way of escape, jumped towards the door and ran out, as fast as his two legs could carry him. He grabbed a spade, which was lying against the wall in the yard. Several men tried to stop him, but he killed three of them. He was about to kill another man, when the latter knocked him out. He was then conveyed to Carlow Asylum. He died there afterwards and ever since that, this wing
