  1. In the townland of Rooskey near Mr. Hamils Mill about 2 1/2 miles from Smithboro the McMahons Chiefs of Monaghan had a stronghold in the 17th century. In the castle lived Hugh McMahon who was betrayed by his foster-brother Owen Connolly of Conaghy. McMahon was one of the Northern Chiefs who organised the rebellion o 1641/42.
He was captured by the English acting on Connolly's information, and executed at Tyburn.
