- There was a hedge school on the old Ture road. There were three dozen scholars, and they paid him two pence a week each. It was taught by a Master Morris. They wrote on slates with slate pencils. The scholars brought the master home every day in their turn, and gave him his dinner. That was before they started to pay him the twopence. He turned out the best of scholars.
