  1. Houses were thatched and the straw was got from the wheat that was grown.
    They used to have a settle-bed in the kitchen It was placed in the corner.
    The fire-place was mostly at the gable-wall. The front of the chimney was made of clay and wattles. There were several houses in the district with no chimney.
    Floor were made of clay and half-doors were very common.
    Wood and colm balls were used as firing Dips were used to give light
    Tallow candles were made in Callan about a hundred years ago.
