Three meals a day were eaten about 60 years ago: potatoes with buttermilk for breakfast and dinner, porridge (yellow-meal) generally for supper.
During hay-making and other special times they ate práipín (page 10) out in hay-field etc.Colcannon - ("calley" in Sligo) boiled potatoes (peeled beforehand boiled and well pounded with a beetle, cream put on them or it. It was then put in plates on the table - family sat around, each armed with a spoon. A "well" or hollow was made in the middle of each plate, and a lump of butter put in this well. Butter soon dissolved, and each person took a spoonful, dipped it into the butter, then ate it. Then another spoonful was taken, dipped into the well to. Into the pot of "cally" a ring was put, and whoever got the ring would be the first to marry. When before eating this meal it was usual to say: " go mbeirmíd beo fé na am seo airís."People worked very hard in olden times: during busy times they were up and at work in fields by daylight, and they continued their work until the daylight failed.Note re Famine Years: When the yellow or "Indian (Injun)(continues on next page)
