When around the Christmas fireside,
Young and old in peace unite. While the crackling logs red blazing,
Throw around a muddy light,
Many a tale of bygone heroes,
Many a time-worn yarn is told,
Both of love, and war, and valour,
And of haunted winds of gold.II
Those delight the youthful listeners,
As they closely gather round,
Hearing how that crocks of money,
Under fairy moats were found,
Listen then and pay attention,
To this tale I am going to tell,
Of a faithless cruel maiden,
And the ever cursed well.III
Purely gushes up the water
Sparkling in the morning light,
Brilliant in the morning sunshine,
Dreary beneath the moonbeams bright,
Pure and clear and unpolluted,
As when new from earth it burst,
Yet the place is stained with murder,
