Long ago people believed that there were fairies in Ireland. The fairies would take away the babies, and if the baby's mother threw the tongs over the cradle the fairies would not take the child.
Once there was a woman who did not throw the tongs over the cradle. One night she was nursing her child and it was crying she said, "if you don't stop crying I'll rake you in the fire". With that the child flew up the chimney to the fairies, and there was a fairy left in its place.
