    but when he came to the lake he could find no boat to take him to the island, so he swam across to it.
    When the serpent saw St Patrick coming he followed him, but St Patrick took out a knife which he carried and killed the serpent with it.
    The blood of the serpent flowed out over the water in the lake and made it red. Afterwards the people called the lake Loch Dearg.
