  1. Nearly every field on my fathers holding is known by its name.
    GortngCeacta
so called from the field of the ploughs, because before the land was divided every one on the Island had a portion of this field, and in the Spring ten or eleven ploughs were to be seen at work together.

    CURRAC DUBH
Nearly the half of our land is called Currac Dubh because it is of a boggy nature and of a blackish colour.

    GORT TOBAR GARBH
so called because it has no shelter from any wind, and is therefore very rough. This is a small field; it only contains about a half an acre.

    GARRAIDHE BÁN
the white garden because the grass that grows there is a whitish colour. This field contains about an acre.

    GORTNACRA
the acre field because it contains one acre only

    CNOC NA GAOITHE
so called because it is exposed to the lake and to the prevalent winds in this Island.

    GORT NA thAITNE
the field of the furze so called because it was covered over with furze long ago. This field contains about three acres.
