  1. After defeating the English Collooney the French advanced towards the north where the United Irishmen were very strong. On reaching the village of Drumahaire news reached them that a strong force of the English was advancing from Enniskillen while an English Column harassed their rear. They wheeled to the south and marched for Longford where they expected help. The United Irishmen were also supposed to be strong in the country which lay ahead of them. ON reaching Drumkeeran they camped for the night on a hill outside the town.
    In the neighborhood of the town lived five brothers named Patterson - these were younger and the mistress of one of these was a women named Moll Darcey. Moll had a brother named Simon. Simon was a tout? for the pattersons and these bribed him to steal some of the
