  1. There are very few old houses in this district. There is at present the thatched whitewashed cabin or the tiled or slated cabin. The first general improvement was made in this locality by the Congested District Board and the present housing scheme and grant.
    This method is fast turning the old cabin to a clean and tidy tiled and slated cottage. The history of the houses of this district ranges from the mudwall cabin to the present tiled and slated cottage, and this history can be placed under the following heads-: first, the mud wall or earth cabin; second, the cottage built of stone and mortar and the roof consisting of thatch; thirdly, the present tiled and slated cottage. The walls of the mudwall cabin were built of clay or bog-sods and roofed with green timber and wattles and thatched with rushes from the field. The old houses had no windows and instead they used a plaited
