To the east it is bounded by a river known as the Black Oak, and to the South it is bounded by the river which flows from Beltra Lake, Mayo to Clew Bay. To the west the boundary is the village of Derryhillock. The land is for the most part rough bog with some fertile stretches along the river banks known as Sraiths. Before the famine there were sixteen or seventeen families living in this village which was divided into two parts Upper and Lower Graffy. Lower Graffy was situated about four hundred yards from the Newport Glenhest road oppose a point about one hundred and fifty yards below Skirdagh School. Skirdagh School is on the side of the Newport-Glenhest road. There were about ten or twelve houses in lower Graffy and they were all clustered together. The remains of most of the houses can still be seen, the gables and walls of many of them are still standing. The people who lived in these houses were all tenants of Sir George O Donnell of Newport House Newport, Mayo. Most of these people died during the famine either of hunger or disease and some of their graves can still be seen in a little plot of ground known locally as The Graveyard.
