  1. (continued from previous page)
With sweethearts, friends and comrades dear,
Oh, many's the happy day I spent.
    With jovial mirth and revelry,
I spent my youthful days content.
    But now oppressions cruel chains
Which do indeed surround us a'
It makes me weep when I should sleep
In a foreign clime when far awa'
Her name to trace a beast first place
A river next you must transpose
And what the vast Atlantic is
With fifty and a vowel shows.
This beauty, she has jet black eyes,
I love her, I make bold to say,
Alas! I cannot count the sighs,
Since she can't come to America.
