    It was not hard to gratify ambitions such as theirs,

    They spilled our blood in '98, burned homes and chapels down,
    To pitch-cap, flog and hang us was law in every town,
    They violated purity defied the laws of God,
    And stained with martyr's, patriot's blood the Emerald Irish sod.
