The individual subscription was usually a penny or a halfpenny, seldom more.The Dances.In pre-war days the dances practised were-The "Sets" - most popular of all. The Lancers - The Schottische and The Barn Dance. During the course of the night two or three 'step-dances reel, jig, hornpipe would be given. In the Broomfield district there were at this time, four or five well known step-dancers the most notable of whom was James Ward of Broomfield. James was a competitor at all the Gaelic League Feiseanna and was the holder of the Ulster Championship (Hornpipe and Reel) which he won sometime about 1911 or 1912. James was a road-making contractor. The poor fellow died, quite a young man, in his early thirties, about 1923 or 1924. He was an excellent singer (tenor) as well and was always in demand at local dances.Another famous dancer of the generation immediately preceding that of James Ward was Feley (Phelim) Grant of Crossmaglen Co. Armagh. Crossmaglen is in Creggan Parish and is bordering on the Broomfield district. The question of who was the better dancer Feley Grant or James Ward was hotly debated by the older inhabitants.
