  2. In the month of October the digging
    of the potatoes begins, and it is
    the most important work of Autumn.
    Long ago they used to dig
    the potatoes out, but nowadays
    the farmers plough them out
    because it would take too long to
    dig a few acres of them.
    The labouring man digs them because he has only land for about half an acre of potatoes.
    Long ago they brought them in,
    in baskets, which they called
    ciseáin.
    There were big baskets, with a
    handle on each side
