- Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and there is Ashes put on the people's foreheads. A grain of salt is thrown on each boy and girl during shrove to preserve them for another year.
- The girls who did not get married during shrove were supposed to have a "smut" or cross looking face on them, and that is why it is "called "smut" Sunday. A fist of salt was thrown on those girls to preserve them for another year
