  1. Long, long ago, it was a custom with the ancient Irish to use snuff at wakes.
    The snuff is a symbol of the dust into which the person will return to. It is also said that the snuff is used (to) also to keep the people present awake. If anybody happened to fall asleep the people would leave a saucer of snuff on their breasts.
