She should wear: “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” When the couple were leaving the house, going to the church to be married, an old woman used to take a handful of oatmeal, or an old shoe, and throw it after them for luck. - Most marriages take place during Shrove, and the old people consider this time to be the luckiest time of the year. Long ago, the people always invited a blacksmith to a wedding, for luck. A married woman always accompanied the bride to church, and another married woman accompanied the bridegroom. All the bridegroom’s neighbor’s gathered together, and lit sheaves of straw as the wedding passed by, and at the same time the windows of every house in the village were lighted up with candles, even in daylight.
In the olden times, there were side-cars and men on horseback at the “dragging home”, and the men on horseback used to challenge one another to see(continues on next page) - Collector
