There are many herbs growing wild in Ireland which are used for medicinal purposes, but they also damage fields. The thistle is almost one of the worst and not alone does it only grow in one farmers land but the seeds blow into the fields beside it and if a farmer does not cut his thistles he is prosecuted. Chicken weed is another very harmful weed because if it left growing it spreads. This weed is very small. Water cress is a plant that grows in streams. It is not a poisonous plant. It can be eaten just the same as cabbage. Nettles are also very harmful if they spread. They can be eaten in the month of May and if they are eaten three times in that month they will keep away all diseases. The dandelion is boiled down into a syrup and used as a blood tonic while the milk of the dandelion is used for curing warts. TheMark Jenkins
