Swift Runners John Lynch, Rockfield, Crosserlough, who had a shop there about 80 years ago used to go to Dublin for his goods. The train then only came as far as Kells. My Lynch used to ride his horse to Kells and a man named Thomas Galligan who was a workman with him used to walk and run after the horse to Kells so as to bring the animal back when Mr Lynch would board the train. One day when they reached Carnacross three miles from Kells Mr Lynch discovered on looking at his watch that he had only 15 minutes in which to board the train. He told Thomas Galligan that he must gallop at full speed or he would miss the train. He also stated that he would leave the horse in a certain yard so that he would have no difficulty in finding him. Thomas Galligan did not wish to be left behind so he took hold of the horses tail and kept pace with the galloping horse till they reached Kells just in time to catch the train.Bernadette McGovern
