Ireland is known as the land of Saints and Scholars. She may also be called the land of heroes because her men have been noted for her bravery. Around Slane there have been such men from time to time in the past. One of these was a man named Walsh who gave his life in endeavouring to save another man from drowning in the river Boyne about fifty six years ago. It was on a Sunday evening and the man went in for a swim at a deep spot to the right of Slane bridge. He got out of his depth and shouted for help and Walsh who happened to be near jumped into the river fully clothed but the current was too strong and both were drowned. He is buried on the Hill of Slane with a headstone to tell of his bravery. Another hero is Patrick Dooner who risked his own life by jumping into the Boyne at a very deep spot to save the life of a boy called McCoy. McCoy was walking along the bank and lost his footing and fell in. He struggles for a while but was in danger of drowning. Dooner who saw this jumped in and brought him safely to the other bank.
