The Potato Crop 27/10/38 There are potatoes grown on my farm. Nearly most of the land is planted under potatoes every year. The people plant the same amount of potatoes every year. The people prepare the ground for sowing the potatoes. There is old manure thrown all over the ground before it it ploughed up. The potatoes are sometimes sown in ridges and sometime in drills. The ground has to be ploughed are harrowed before we can make the drills. Long ago wooden ploughs were used but now iron ploughs are used. There are not many wooden ploughs left. The potatoes have to be prepared before sowing. If the potatoes are big they are cut in halves called scalps. (Picture of spade) This is the kind of spade used. In the Summer the people have to weed the potatoes. In the Autumn the potatoes have to be dug. Sometimes the people dig them out and sometimes they plough them out. They pick them into sacks or buckets. They store them in lofts and pits. The pit is made out in the fields. The potatoes are built in the pit in the shape of a rick. There are many kinds of potatoes, Leinster Wonders, Kerry Blues, Kiers Pinks, Aran Banners, Champions and Scottish Wonders. The type of potatoes that are grown in the District are Kiers Pinks and Aran Banners. In olden times the peopleMairead Reilly McKiernan
