In the famine days there lived in this locality an old woman whose name was Mrs Harkins. She was very poor and wretched. One night she was very hungry and, as she had nothing to eat, she felt that death was not far off . She cleaned herself up and was preparing herself to go to bed to die. She sat down by the fire to rest a little and "whatever look she gave" to the fire she saw a fist of beans on the hearth - about twenty or thirty of them. The woman made a "plunge" for the beans and she got and ate them. This kept her alive for that time until next day, when she went to one of the neighbours' houses where she got food. She thought it was a miracle 'about the beans' as there was not a single bean in the locality at the time. This woman lived about ten years after this.Patricia Lysaght
