During the Penal Days there was a gallows erected on the roadside between Knockane and Emly. Here many a poor peasant was strangled by the "bandogs" of the law but after the year 1798 this cruel work was done away with. About eighty or ninty years ago a man who was riding a horse was passing beside the gallows at a very late hour. He suddenly beheld three big bloodhounds breathing flames of fire out their mouths and nostrils. His frightened horse dashed away at a furious pace and the horrified rider could scarcely hold his grip in the saddle. He had not gone far when the hounds passed him out.
