No one in the neighbourhood remembers the introduction of tea but the older generation remember it as a "luxury" only - on very special occasions. Two meals a day was the daily routine and these consisted of potatoes and salt and sour milk, locally called skidder. In later days three meals were taken of the small food. Men went to work in the early morning - mowing and ploughing especially, fasting and had a meal of potatoes about 8 a.m. Potatoes again at 2 p.m. and again at night after the day's work was over. Still later, bread was made of yellow meal and home crushed oats but thes was used only very sparingly and milk was used with it. Wooden plates and mugs and wooden spoons were used by the grown-ups but the children peeled the potatoes with their fingers where a delicate child was, a little cream was used to moisten the potatoes and new milk was given instead of sour.
