Origin of St. Barry's Well In the townland of Bungora close to the edge of Kilglass lake in county Roscommon St. Barry's holy well is situated. Very many years ago when St/ Barry loved in those parts a certain family had, one evening, prepared a supper of oaten stirabout and when they were ready to eat it a strange voice spoke from the pot in which it was, and the family, no doubt, were alarmed, and went straight away for St. Barry. St. Barry hastened to the place and after having prayed over the food for a time a monster arose out of the stirabout and fled towards the lake but St. Barry, drawing his staff, for those were the days of the sword and spear, followed close upon his track. But the good St. Barry stumbled on some uneven ground and seeing that he could not overtake the monster he cast his spear before he fell upon his knees. His unerring blowAnaithnidChloe Lawson
