Long ago in this district when nails were not sold in any of the local shops, the people got the smith to make nails whenever they needed them, and of whatever length they required them. The local blacksmith made the nails from iron. First an iron bar was heated so that it could be moulded into any shape required. The smith then shaped the iron into long thin bars. At the end of the anvil there is an iron rod standing upright having a sharp edged horizontal piece attached known as a "cutter".
