In almost every part of Ireland certain articles are kept in houses and places in certain positions in the houses in honour of some saint or to commemorate some feast-day. For instance, the "girdle" of St. Brigid is made of rushes and two bits of sticks. It is still made in some homes. In each townland a chosen person carries the girdle aloft from house to house while repeating certain prayers.
