Long ago people were not as well educated as they are now and did not have any books. Some of the poorer people were not able to read books and they therefore said prayers, which they made themselves, at Mass and other times during the day. The following prayer which is very old was said after awaking in the morning and is as follows:- "I thank the great God for having brought me safe the night. May He bring me safe through the day and keep me in the blessed and holy state of grace and in the ways of salvation, Sweet heavenly Father Amen." If a man were going on a journey at night or any other time he would bless himself and say "May God be with me and direct me on this journey and keep me safe from all accident, Amen". When going to bed at night the following prayer was said. "O my God, I must die, I don't know when were or how. O my God, you who knows it, grant me the grace to die a holy and a happy death and never to die in mortal sin. Amen. The following prayer was often said also "Mother of mercy, Mother of grace. Mary help a fallow vase [?], shield us when the foe is nigh and recieve us when we die. Amen."Caitlin Browne
