Potatoes are grown in my district every year, and about an English acre that is sown under them. All farmers plough the ground with a plough and a pair of horses, and all the labourers prepare the ground with a spade. During the end of the winter the big farmers manure the land before they set the seed. Long ago it was timber plough's were used by the farmers, and the labourers used to work with spades. The spades are bought in a shop, and are given to a carpenter to "let them in". The preparations that are made for potatoes are : At first the ground is ploughed into ridges. Then, the seed is "stuck". When the potatoes are up they are earthed and after a while they are sprayed. (Contd.)Aileen Brennan
