Bread in olden times There were many different kinds of bread used in olden times. The most common being, "Boxty0bread" "Potato cake" and "Oaten-meal cake" "Boxty-bread" was made in the following manner. Three or four potatoes are obtained and the skin was taken off and the remaining part was washed. There was an instrument obtained this was called a "scraper" It was usually made locally. Flour and baking soda were mixed with the scraped potatoes. A pan was then obtained and the cake was set to bake. In olden times people usually made "Potato cakes" It was made in the following way. Potatoes were first washed and boiled. They were then allowed to cool for an hour. The skin was then taken off the boiled potatoes and they were put into a basin and mashed up fine. Flour was then mixed with the potatoes. The cake was then put on a pan to bake. When the cake was baked it was usually allowed to cool. it was cut in four parts.
