Crafts Continued Besides the sea-weed being made into kelp, we have another source of industry to be obtained from the sea. This is the Irish Moss also known as Carrigeen Moss. This plant is the same colour as the sea-weed but very very fine. The women living along our coast gather it and leave it in the sun until it turns white. They sell it and it can be bought in a grocer's shop for 6d per lb. The Carrigeen when cooked on milk is an excellent tonic for a bad stomach, and it can be used as a dessert. Shell fish are not very plentiful round our coast but occasionally we send lobsters, oysters and periwinkles to the markets in our town. Dulse is a sea-weed which is sometimes used for food. It is dried in the open air and when crisp is sold on the markets. It can be eaten raw or boiled on milkTreasa
