People used to have three meals a day in olden times. They were the breakfast, the dinner and the supper. The breakfast used to be eaten in the morning, the dinner about three o'clock and the supper at night. The people used to begin their work at dawn of day and work for a long time before they would take the breakfast. At breakfast and supper the people used to have potatoes and buttermilk. Sometimes they used to have porridge. At the dinner they used to have potatoes and herring. The table used to be placed near the wall when the people used to be eating. It was never hung up when not in use. The kind of bread that was eaten was oat bread. It was made with oatmeal, water and salt mixed together and baked on a grid-iron. Meat was not eaten often. Sometimes the people used to eat bacon. Fish were eaten very often. The vegetables that were eaten were turnips and cabbage. There was nothing else eaten that is gone out of fashion now. Sometimes the people used to eat late at night. There never was any special food eaten on special occasions. There are no other customs attached to feast days except egg-eating on Easter Sunday and nut-eating on November night. About 100 years ago tea was first used in the district. Before cups became common noggins were used and they were made of wood.Marian
