A piece of Sallyrod or any other sappy wood about 3 inches long and not very thick was procured. A cut was put through the skin all round about midway. A slanting piece was cut-off one end and a nick taken out about half an inch below this. Then it was tapped with a knife to loosen the skin which was slipped off from the midway cut. The pointed end had a flat piece removed from the nick to the end and the skin put on again. This made a fine whistle. piece of wood with a peel on it. cut at dotted lines and tap gently. peel removed from half and small strip removed from nick to point complete whistle. with peel put back again where it was originally. A chestnut had a round hole put in the top of the shell and the pulp picked out to make a whistle. (Sixty years ago the pupils attending Farnaughs N.S S Leitrim made these whistles.)Gracia Troyano
