Social gatherings were frequently held in this district and at all of them various members contributed songs. Those gatherings were: Dances, Weddings, Christenings, Bonfire, Harvest Home and up to about 40 years ago, songs were sung at Wakes [?]. The types of songs sung in this parish [?] might be divided under such heads as 1) Laments 2) Love songs 3) Patriotic subjects 4) Religious discussions 5) Miscellaneous. There were two popular airs for laments. The subject of the lament was (a) An accident (b) Murder (3) Hanging. A ballad was composed of some local poet who sang it at fairs, meetings, etc. and sold at 1/2d each. The most popular air in this district for all laments is given here with the words. My brother, who is now a retired teacher, collected a large number of old airs and played them at some National Feis in Dublin about the year 1903. HeHugh HartiganRhiannon
