Wednesday has always been the favourite day for weddings in this part of the country, but a great many marriages took place on Shrove Tuesday because it used to be thought that the couple might fall out during the seven weeks of Lent. Up to about thirty years ago all the neighbours were invited to weddings. It used to take a great many jaunting cars to bring the whole party to the Church. After the ceremony all went off for a long drive round the country. It was not considered lucky for the bride to return the same way she came. There was usually a melodeon player in the party, and all sang as they drove along. A halt was made in any town the party passed through and this gave the people at home plenty of time to prepare the wedding feast. The different cars raced one another.
