Leaving Lucan by the Esker road up the steep hill, and passing the new cemetery, we presently enter the little village of Esker, more populous in former years, and once possessing a Grammar School and a cotton factory. The district of Esker was one of the four ancient Royal manors of County Dublin, the revenues of which were on occasions applied to the defence of the Pale against "The Irish Enemie".
