Many years ago the the only means of traveling were by mail coaches or on horseback Lord Gormanston and ancestor of the present Lord Gormanston was returning from Dublin on horseback. His horse grew tired a short distance outside Balbriggan at a place locally known as the "Cuckoo" or the "Bear". At the time an hotel or inn stood on this spot. Now this was an hotel of bad repute and any people were traced as far as it but were never after heard of. However Lord Gormanston went in and booked a bed for the night. After supper he was shown to his room. When he was left alone he began pondering over the bad name the hotel had. He sat at the fire for a long time.
