About forty years ago we had in this town great industry namely brick making by hand. This old industry gave employment to one hundred men and it was a great loss to the town when it was given up. Those bricks were made from clay which was burned in large kilns. A great many of the houses in the town were built with them. They are a fine hard brick and last for a very long time. They were made in batches of one thousand and spread out to harden. This fine industry was carried on by Messr's William and Thomas Cumisky, the ancestors of the present family. Messr's Sharkeys had also a brickyard out at Clonard which gave considerable employment to the local men. We had also a very famous industry in Balrothery, biscuit-making which was carried on by people named Sonsmiths. This industry has been for a great number of years extinct.
