The Local Roads Nowadays there are so many good roads in his district that we cannot realize what it must have been long ago with only one or two roads in every district. One of the oldest roads in this district is the Newcastle road, this is situated in the south west end of the parish. This was part of the main road from Waterford before the present Cork to Waterford main road was made. After the famine years during the time known as the Public Relief Works most of the roads in this district were made. Nearly all the roads in this district got their names from the townsland through which they ran, such as the Carriganure road, which runs through the centre of the townsland of Carriganure. This road crosses the River Dawn about one hundred yards from where it reaches the main road. The bridge over the River Dawn is know as the "Metal Bridge". Before the bridge was erected people crossed it by means of a ford.Margaret Bonar
