In the olden times the people did not know what lamps were, so they had to make their own light. The people used to go out in the fields and gather a lot of green rushes. They used to peel the outside off them and plait five or six of them together. Then they would hang them over the fire to dry. When they would be dried they used to soak them in tallow. Then they used to hang them in a cool place to dry. Their candles are then made and they lit them when they wanted them. They showed good lights. The people also made candles out of dried bog-deal. They cut it into strips and twisted them. Then they soaked them in tallow and they also made good candles. She heard this in her own home from her father.Bernie HughesPádraig Ó Catháin
